Credit Repair Help

Hi Kate, I need credit repair help. After divorce I was forced to file bankruptcy. I had wonderful credit and my husband took advantage if it. Debt was in my name and his was the major income. It has been 3 years. I have worked hard to reestablish.

I had a 90 day due to a consolidated student loan. We must both pay together. They will not take separate pmts. These are considered partial. I give him the money and never knew it went late.

Due to poor credit lies and manipulation from a shady broker I am currently in a horrible mortgage. I have had for 2 1/2 yrs. Never late.

I was set to close on a mortgage refi the next morning. Received a call that credit score dropped and they would not refinance until fixed and up. Again stuck.

Pulled report and found medical. Insurance had told me several times to send any bills to them. I had sent and never knew they didn't pay. I had a conference call between collection and them. It is now paid and collection says will be deleted.

This hit 2 months ago. How much and how long will this affect my credit score? Can I do anything about consolidated student loan? It has 20 more years at $450 for approx. $40,000. We are no longer married and decree says to half. SALLIE MAE WILL NOT.

Good Credit Gives Leverage

Having just gone through getting a loan for a car I found a couple of things interesting. I was reminded that the calculation on a car loan is
really no different that figuring out a mortgage, okay a few more moving parts on a mortgage, but the math is the same.

My interaction with the dealers shifted in my favor because I could check their numbers to be sure that I was getting right price and the cheapest money. You don't want to overpay on either of those.

The second thing was the amount of leverage you get when your credit is very good or excellent. You can say with confidence, "Give me the best rate that you give your best customers."

I qualified for the best rates and it was nice to know before starting the negotiation process.

It just reinforced to me the notion that a person should get and keep good credit. If it's not so good, focus on making it good.
