I want to fix my credit score... and fix it up fast! That's what Kendra, my friend, told me as we chatted on the phone. Her finances were a mess. When she came to me for a mortgage, I'd rarely seen a sorrier credit history. I actually wondered if there was any hope.
Stop looking for the quick fix, I told Kendra, and listen carefully to what I am about to tell you. You need access to all three credit bureaus and all three credit scores to get the full picture. This is important because by taking control of your credit, you are protecting your future.
Tip: Begin today to pay all bills, credit cards, and loans before the due date. No excuses allowed.
Tip: Inquiries reduce credit scores. Never submit multiple credit applications when shopping for cars, furniture, credit cards, mortgages, or personal loans.
Tip: Order a copy of your credit report and credit score from all 3 major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
Tip: Review your credit report for errors, pay all collections, and get written receipts showing payment in full.
Tip: Do not cut up credit cards after paying them off. Paid accounts improve a credit score.
Tip: Do not close old accounts. A seasoned credit history will increase credit scores.
Some credit gurus recommend cutting up credit cards and closing accounts. Do not listen to them. They think you have no self-control and cannot manage your money.
But if you want something badly enough, you will control yourself. However if you do what the credit gurus say and cut up your cards, you could very possibly lower your credit score. So make the decison today that you are going to take control of your finances!
One more tip: Pay credit card purchases off monthly. Otherwise use cash until the credit card balance is zero again.
By the way, twelve months later, no one was more shocked than I when Kendra and I reviewed her credit history. But truthfully, I shouldn't have been so surprised. After all, Kendra had used my tips to repair her credit.
