I Left My Heart In New York City

by Ginny
(Key West Florida)

Seventy years ago I was born alongside the Hudson River in New York City in what is called Washington Heights, later it was sometimes called Spanish Harlem. Old family movies show my parents and myself in a park on the middle of Broadway which was near our apartment.

When we moved in with my grandparents across the river in Fort Lee on the other side of the George Washington Bridge, I used to walk across the bridge with my friends to New York City on the other side. I loved to sit on top of the palisade cliffs overlooking the river from the New Jersey side and see the towering buildings and cars racing up and down the West Side highway that runs along the river.

Many years later I moved back into New York City to work in one of the large department stores near Herald Square. I lived on the upper east side but walked from work home many nights because New York is a "walking city". The blocks seemed like nothing as I sauntered past the most fascinating retail stores, restaurants and bars.

One day as I was riding in a taxi to work, a knight in full armor on a white horse with a lance in his hands rode past as we stopped for a traffic light. He was most likely costumed for a photo shoot and heading to it, but no one even turned around in a double-take, such is the attitude of New Yorkers. It's a wonderful place and it will always be my home town.
