When I was buying a house...I chose my real estate agent by getting referrals from my friends. I asked them how the person worked out for them and if they would recommend them again.
Once I had a few names, I then picked one based on the neighborhoods they specialized in and whether they work in an area I want to be in. I picked someone that specialized in the urban areas and was knowledgeable about town homes and condos.
My real estate agent worked out well and I was able to purchase a condo in the neighborhood where I wanted to live. I haven't used her again because I haven't needed an agent.
The only thing I would do differently next time I'm buying a house is maybe find a real estate agent with more experience. The one I chose was fairly new in the business. She did a good job but I'm not sure all of the i's were dotted and the t's crossed.
